Eating: an act of citizenship

Dans un monde sans cesse en mouvement et dans lequel les orientations changent à chaque instant, il est compliqué de faire la part des choses et de rester critique face à la profusion dIn a world that is constantly on the move and where we are going every which way, it is difficult to become involved in anything and to look at the overwhelming information we receive in a critical manner. Difficult for everyone to look at how he/she will behave the next day. Iles de Paix promotes the understanding of mechanisms, the impacts of our diets, ways of making possible changes and their implementation, so that we can think of our world in a new way and become actor of a transition towards agro-ecology and a world of global solidarity and citizenship.

Our work in Belgium

In Belgium we initiate discussions alone, or with other NGOs, on how to look at the world differently and how to have more just food systems. We educate and mobilise the young, and not so young, and we work with our decision makers to make conscientious changes.

  • We are addressing young people directly through the schools. Preschools, primaries, secondary and post-secondary schools use our learning resources and include our animations on various topics of international solidarity. We also carry out long-term projects: learning paths, immersion trips for the students, etc.
  • We assist teachers and student teachers in discovering education for global citizenship and  solidarity, in deepening a theme, or even in discovering our teaching tools. We also hold educational trips for teachers.
  • 40,000 volunteers carry out an annual fund raising campaign and raise awareness about Iles de Paix. This awareness program is well-recognised around Belgium for educating thousands of people about the importance of sustainable food systems and for the need to raise funds to support our work in Belgium and abroad.
  • As a member of the  Coalition Against Hunger, we work with decision makers to make structural changes in the food systems of Belgium, as well as internationally. We conduct research, and meet with politicians and official bodies to discuss incorporating agro-ecology in the Belgium government’s action plans.
  • We analyse the lessons learned from our work with farming communities so these can be shared with other organisations involved in promoting sustainable food systems.
  • To further this movement, we hold events with the public, show documentaries, and present research findings.
